DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Xtreme Legends is included in DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered, not sold as a second download. Steam and the official hubs say the expansion adds seven officer stories, bodyguard editing, new weapons, and four challenge modes. Lu Bu, Meng Huo, and Yuan Shao are the three story officers those pages actually name, which is why those three carry XL-story badges on the officer grid. Japanese packaging still brands the whole SKU 真・三國無双２ with 猛将伝 Remastered, the local official title for this Complete Edition.
Seven officer stories, three named
The expansion's headline is seven extra officer stories. Lu Bu, Meng Huo, and Yuan Shao are the names Steam and the US hub actually print. The remaining four stories exist as a count, not as a published roster, so they are not listed here as if KOEI TECMO had named them. If you are buying this remaster for XL, you are buying those seven routes plus the original Musou Mode set in one install.
Lu Bu is the obvious XL draw: Others-force, Hulao Gate myth, and the officer most people remember from the PS2 expansion. Meng Huo and Zhurong sit together in the Nanman pair on the List of Officers, but only Meng Huo is named for an XL story. Yuan Shao is the third named story officer, which matches the expansion's habit of giving also-ran warlords their own path. Bodyguards, not extra kingdoms, are the other XL identity.
Bodyguard editing and new weapons
Bodyguard customization / 護衛兵のエディット is the XL camp feature. Original DYNASTY WARRIORS 3 did not let you edit bodyguards this way; the expansion added it, and the remaster keeps it inside Camp alongside Weapon Fusion. You prepare officers and bodyguards in the same room. The hubs do not print a bodyguard stat block, so no unofficial bodyguard table is added here.
New weapons are part of the same XL pass. Digital Deluxe separately adds 42 fusion weapons as a paid include, which is a Deluxe bonus rather than the base XL weapon set. Keep those two lists straight: XL new weapons are in the Complete Edition by default; the 42 fusion weapons are a Deluxe extra. Weapon Fusion is how spare weapons become material either way.
Camp is shared with Weapon Fusion, so XL bodyguards and remaster fusion sit in one prep room. That is a different layout from buying XL as a 2003 disc and swapping it in the tray. Because this is one install, you do not need a code to turn bodyguards on. You still need to open Camp and actually edit them; the feature is not an automatic AI upgrade on the field.
Four challenge modes from the expansion
Xtreme Legends added four challenge modes on top of the base game's Challenge Mode rules. Steam restates that count without naming the four modes in the remaster store blurb. The base Challenge Mode still publishes Endurance, Time Attack (100 enemies), and Assault (three-minute combo). Treat the XL four as extra challenge playlists inside this SKU, not as replacements for those three rules.
Because this is a Complete Edition, you do not toggle XL as DLC after purchase. Japanese TREASURE BOX packaging still sells original plus XL soundtrack material as physical extras, which is a box bonus rather than extra stories. If you only care about the seven stories and bodyguards, Standard already has them. Digital Deluxe Edition is for costumes, fusion weapons, and the Officer Concept Art Collection.
Use Challenge Mode from the base playlist to learn Endurance, Time Attack, and Assault, then treat the XL four as extra score boxes once you own the full game. The remaster store blurb does not name those four, and those four stay unnamed until a hub lists them. After launch, if an official patch names them, that is when the list can grow. Until then the honest count is four extra challenge playlists plus the three named base rules.
Why XL is not a second install
Complete Edition means original disc plus expansion in one Unreal Engine 5 build. Japanese 猛将伝 in the title is that expansion's local name, not a sequel. You will not find a separate Steam app for XL under this product. App 3841510 is the full SKU; app 4995490 is only the Hulao Gate demo.

This remaster page exists so those topics stay attached to the 2026 SKU instead of to PS2 manuals. Bodyguards, seven stories, and four extra challenge modes are the XL extras you should expect when you boot Camp after launch, without a DLC prompt.
If you owned the PS2 expansion disc, the feeling you want is already in this install: extra stories, bodyguards, extra weapons, extra challenges. You do not rebuy XL after Standard. You also do not get a 43rd officer from XL; the 42-person remaster list already includes Lu Bu, Meng Huo, Yuan Shao, and the rest of Others. Lu Bu's Hulao reputation is why people still search the expansion by his name, but the Complete Edition already puts him in Others with a remaster portrait. Meng Huo's Nanman route is the second named story; Yuan Shao's is the third. Bodyguard editing is the systemic extra that outlives any one of those seven plots, because you take customized guards back into Musou Mode and Free Mode after the credits of an XL story.
